Alpine Folk Art – Swiss farmers spent the winter painting their furniture and houses, and doing decoupage, an intricate form of paper cutting. We visit a museum to see the finest examples of this work and meet an artist at work. Alpine Helicopter and Hot Air Balloon Excursions – The best way to see the Alps is from the air. We take viewers on an exciting helicopter ride up a glacier to have a picnic in a chalet, and we go on a hot air balloon ride over charming villages. The Palace Hotel – The Palace is one of the original great hotels of the world, and when it was built it turned Gstaad from a sleepy village into a jet-set paradise. We see what attracts the super-rich and famous.

A film by Mari Ekkje and Brendan J Doyle. Norseman is the world’s toughest long-distance distance triathlon. It is also the most northern, taking place at the same latitude as Anchorage in Alaska. The race is a travel through some of the most beautiful parts of Norway. It is not a normal circuit-race as it starts in a fjord and finishes at mountain Gaustatoppen at 1850 meters above sea level. Total ascent is 5000 meters. The water temperature is normally about 15.5 degrees C, and the air temperature normally ranges from 6 to 28 degrees C through the race day. The first about 160 participants are expected to be allowed to finish at the top of the mountain. The others are allowed to finish at the mountain plateau. www.nxtri.com

Details, quoting from Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum: Steven F. Udvar-Hazy | Nakajima J1N1-S Gekko (Moonlight) IRVING:

Originally designed as a three-seat, daylight escort fighter plane by the Nakajima Aeroplane Company, Ltd., and flown in 1941, the IRVING was modified as a night fighter in May of 1943 and shot down two American B-17 bombers to prove its capability. The Gekko (meaning moonlight) was redesigned to hold only two crewmen so that an upward firing gun could be mounted where the observer once sat. Nearly five hundred J1N1 aircraft, including prototypes, escort, reconnaissance, and night fighters were built during World War II. A sizeable number were also used as Kamikaze aircraft in the Pacific. The few that survived the war were scrapped by the Allies.

This J1N1 is the last remaining in the world. It was transported from Japan to the U.S. where it was flight tested by the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1946. The Gekko then flew to storage at Park Ridge, IL, and was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution. The restoration of this aircraft, completed in 1983, took more than four years and 17,000 man-hours to accomplish.

Boeing’s B-29 Superfortress was the most sophisticated propeller-driven bomber of World War II and the first bomber to house its crew in pressurized compartments. Although designed to fight in the European theater, the B-29 found its niche on the other side of the globe. In the Pacific, B-29s delivered a variety of aerial weapons: conventional bombs, incendiary bombs, mines, and two nuclear weapons.

On August 6, 1945, this Martin-built B-29-45-MO dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, Bockscar (on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum near Dayton, Ohio) dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. Enola Gay flew as the advance weather reconnaissance aircraft that day. A third B-29, The Great Artiste, flew as an observation aircraft on both missions.

One tends to get bored when stranded on a plane for nine hours…

My ATL ? HPN (White Plains, NY) flight got canceled – the ATL ? JFK substitute flight got diverted to PHL (Philadelphia) … and then we sat there for four hours. It took a grand total of nine hours to touch the ground with my own two feet again…

srsly, I should book first class, I’m too tall for this :/

After the end of the cold war, this amazing aircraft has been removed from the official american Air Force flight planning. This video shows the last official flight of this awesome airplane for the US Air Forces. The first song is Era (from the album “Era”… the band is Era). The second song is “Mighty wings” from Cheap Trick(Top Gun soundtrack).
