budget airfares
by J. Stephen Conn

Question by Adrianne: 00 Honeymoon – anyone have suggestions for a location where this budget will be enough?
After we pay for our wedding, we’ll only have about 00 left to take our honeymoon. This pretty much rules out flying to the Caribbean… but that’s ok with us. We are considering Florida or Myrtle Beach? Or perhaps Niagara Falls? We live in Michigan and we’d like to save money by driving (between the cost of airfare and a rental car when we get there). But – I also don’t want to be in the car longer than I have to be. :)

Our wedding is mid-september. We just want to find someplace relaxing. It doesn’t have to be on the ocean, it doesn’t have to have palm trees (nice as a setting like that may be). It just seems like the more tourist-y a place is, the higher the prices are to spend time there. If anyone has a suggestion that’s “off the beaten path,” that would keep costs down I’d appreciate it!

Any suggestions?
Oh and by the way – no cruises. My fiance is scared to death of getting on a boat. :) We need to stay on land, lol!

Not sure if driving is an option, but it will save money over flying…

Yellowstone National Park
Savannah, Georgia (Tybee Island especially!)
Any Florida Beach is always good. Sarasota is my favorite by FAR, I live in Florida.

Question by Zoe: I am a single parent on a budget; how do I decide if I should go to my brother’s wedding or not?
I would like to go to my brother’s wedding, but it is in Alaska, and I am in NY. All the expenses with airfare for myself and my daughter and hotel and food and gift and car rental and any sightseeing we do while we are in Alaska (because how could we not stay a few extra days for a vacation – when do you ever get to go to Alaska?), etc., will cost at least 00-3000 or more. That is a month’s salary for me; plus vacation days I need for when my daughter is ill or off school.

I am a single parent, and have been working very hard at getting out of debt (,000 left to go), and saving some emergency money for us.

I hear from my brother about once a year if that. But I think my family will be disappointed if I do not go. However, I feel it is important to take care of myself and my daughter financially, and have some money saved. When I was facing divorce a few years back and had nowhere to go and no money – not one of my family members helped me, financially or much emotionally either, other than one or two phone calls.

So, I would really like to go and support and celebrate my brother and his bride…but I feel like it will be another thing that I do for someone else that makes myself and my daughter less secure.

Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Trying to Get to Alaska on a Budget?

Question by Tracy O: Trying to Get to Alaska on a Budget?
Has anyone traveled to Alaska and NOT spent an arm and a leg?

I was doing some research online and found a roundtrip by rail from Anchorage to Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge, 3 days, 2 nights and thought the price was good (0 per person), then when you add in the airfare and a single activity like sportfishing, then you really start getting up there. I had not looked into a cruise because I just expect them to be high.

My hubby and I never took a honeymoon and we’ve always said that this would be the place to go so I started to look into it.

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by Army Wife
well, depending on where you are from, airfare can be up to 1200 bucks or more!!
The rail trip into Denali is well worth what they quoted you. its a very nice trip and the Princess lodge is nice and within walking distance from a “ghost town”. It’s only open from May to Sept. You get to see more wildlife from the train than you would on a car. Bring your camera!!!
There is also no sales tax here in Alaska (minus a few towns), but some things can run high in price.
Try websites like priceline.com and stuff for your airfare. Princess will pick you up from the airport.

Question by Matt W: Anyone have info on a low budget trip to amsterdam?
I am looking into going to amsterdam with a couple buddies, i was looking on orbitz and prices were way high like 1100 for rountrip airfare and like the cheapest hotel was like 400 a night, i was wondering what the hostels are like, after seeing the movie hostel and knowing im not going to have the most clear head while in amsterdam im kindy sketchy on the hostels, also like how much does it cost to eat there and is the food nasty,
i mean i know its gonna cost me some jack, cheese, moula whateva but im willing to spend alot of money but they for real i dont care if the place where i rest my head isnt the nicest place as long as i dont get fucked with, cause i dont plan on being where i sleep too often, im definately open to new foods but i just wanna know if its nasty because i went to mexico thinkin i was gonna get some real authentic mexican food and it was disqusting and everyonei talked to said it was too, to be honest im mainly going for the smoke shops and some different culture( id also like to visit the red light district but ill have my girl with me) but anyway im just not looking to spend a half my savings just to go get stoned in another country i wanna know (besides anne frank house causei dont care about that) what else is there to do cheap

I stayed in Amsterdam for 5 days. I stayed in a hostel, which was very clean, and safe. I am a vegetarian but I was able to find all kinds of food to eat, and it WAS good! I was on a very tight budget, but I also did a lot of shopping in the markets and kept food in my backpack to save money, and I saved a ton of it!
Through my 2 month vacation, I also traveled by train, and had purchased a Eurail pass. They have many passes to consider. You may save money by traveling to London and catching a train to Amsterdam. It’s worth looking into.
Have fun!

Question by : How much would I have to budget, minimum, to travel to London?
I am from America, traveling from Detroit to London. I have found packages that allegedly start at 900 dollars for hotel and air, but after going to the checkout screen, after taxes and fees, it ends up around ,400. Now, I know about all the tricks like using the Piccadilly Line to travel into London to save money, and using the Eurostar to go to Paris. However, going to London, how much would I need there, assuming I would go to pubs/clubs, museums, historical sites, eat out, etc?

I think at the most, I could part with ,000, but I’m more willing to do it for ,000. That hotel and airfare is a killer though. I know there will be additional charges for the visa and OTHER things.

Should I just wait for the exchange rates to go down before considering a London trip? My backup plan is Las Vegas with my friend this summer, it would be MUCH cheaper, and I like cheap. I’m not planning on gambling much. I sowed my wild oats with that years ago, it won’t be a problem.

You didn’t mention the Length of your visit to London but I would say ,000 you could do 8-12 days depending on what you want to do there. I visited London last October and spent about that much total for 12 days- and that included everything.

Most major museums are Free

do you want a hotel or would you consider a Bed & Breakfast?

Do you want to eat in nicer restaurants or is Pub grub/cafes ok?

I went to 2 Theater Plays/2 comedy shows/ and a music revue ( not a clubber/pub person so I can’t advice about that)

And I went to see a British Talk ( chat show) filmed at the BBC ( free but you must get tickets online)

If you really want to see London then I would say Go! There is sooo much there to do and see.

Question by : Backpacking in London on a budget: Hostel advice? Transportation questions?
I’m backpacking a bit in Europe this summer and I just changed plans to add five nights in London (a killer deal on airfare if I flew into London and took the chunnel to Paris, my original point of origin). I want to go to the National Portrait Gallery, I have some tours booked in London proper (starting at Hyde Park, Covent Garden, and Tower Hill), and I *hope* to get a rush ticket to a show at the Globe and to something on the west end.

I know the farther outside of London proper, the less expensive the hostels. My question is, how far out is too far to be prudent? For example, I’ve noticed a lot of good deals in the Bayswater area, and I understand where that is on a map, but I have no idea how difficult it is to get from one place to another using buses and the underground. How late do the buses and trains run at night? And how expensive are they? Is it more financially prudent to drop an extra twenty dollars per night to stay right downtown than to save it and commute?

Thank you!

If you are staying for 5 nights, then you should get an Oyster Card for travel. It initially costs £3 and then you put cash on it for travel. There is a price capping system. If you travel outside of peak hours, no more than £6.60 will be taken from the card for any number of journeys by tube or bus in Zone 1 – 2 (where the majority of sight are). If you travel during peak times, it will be no more than £8 per day. Without an Oyster card, journeys on the tube will be £4 per journey and on the bus, £2.20 per journey, so you can see that it is cheaper with Oyster.

As an example, by tube, Bayswater to Trafalgar Square will take approximately half an hour and by bus approximately 45 minutes. Tubes finish for the night at around 12.30p.m. (each station will have times of last trains on display), but buses travel through the night, so if you stayed out late, there would be no problems in getting back.

The Transport for London website has a journey planner and ticket prices. Even if you stay closer to the centre of town, your journey costs will work out more or less the same.

budget airfares
by J. Stephen Conn

Question by Chookielowah: I’m backpacking India: Budget and route questions?
First time backpacking overseas. Decided on India (sorry Thailand and Vietnam, next time). And I’m having a hard time finding comprehensive information on how to plan my trip. I’ve been advised against the Lonely Planet books, as they are apparently aimed toward your average “has more money than a college student” tourist. Trying to go for minimum spending. I’ve heard of street food and produce for a couple rupees (fractions of a cent). But I’ve found very little about hostels, besides the fact that there are a ton of them. Are there websites that will give me useful information on which hostels are cheaper or better than others? And on average, how much is the cost of staying a night at a hostel? My ballpark figure for the whole trip is 00, and I’m hoping to stay at least 8 weeks. Is it safe to assume that after airfare and visas and whatnot, – a day seems reasonable? Too high? Too low? I frankly have no clue what to expect.

My length of stay leads me to my second big question, about how long would it feasibly take me to cover the amount of ground I want to…. I want to see Delhi, Rajasthan, Mumbai, and Goa… Which is a straightforward enough route. But I also want to hit Kolkata and Darjeeling. Which would make the difference between a straight line, and a bigass circle. I don’t know if it’d be more realistic to save those two for a different trip.

I’d pretty much just like to get some input and advice from experienced folks who’ve gone through what I’m aspiring to.

Are you a tourist or a adventurous traveler?

Do not plan, just wander aimlessly like a stray dog. that will give you the best adventure.

forget the luxury of the hostels. what do you think park benches, and train Stations are for. or hang out at the Universities and meet, other students. crash at their place , they will be happy to share their food with you.
Suggest you first head down to Kerla,Trivandrum and zigzag your way north, travel by train and bus, foot, elephant.
it did it in 1975 including Sri Lanka and Bangledesh.
also best to travel alone.

Q&A: Dream vacation on a budget?!?

Question by banidani17: Dream vacation on a budget?!?
So me and my best friend (we are girls) want to go on a trip to a tropical country for our 20th birthday (a little over a year away) it seems early but weare college students and need ample time to save money on a trip we would really love and remember…
We are having a hard time deciding exactly where to go, but we have thought about Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras etc.
We arent too high maintenence BUT because it is our birthday we would like to stay in a nice hotel / resort. Suite like, maybe some cool ammenities etc. (spa option would be cool)
We don’t mind sharing a room and such (obviously) and we are willing to spend (including airfare) about 1500-1800 per person.
If anyone can design a cool vacation package idea (or just give me ideas on either location or hotel) it would be greatly appreciated.

Question by : Buying honeymoon online, budget, does this work out?
Like at expedia, or orbitz…or priceline…etc.

They have trips with airfare/hotel for 3 nights as low as 300 dollars per person! Is that too good to be true? So I buy the tickets online for 2 people, right? Our trip with airplane and hotel will only be 0?

Then we just have to use the money we take with us on food and shopping…does this sound correct?
Additional question…haha yes I’m cheating by having 2 questions instead of one….how do I do this? Pay for it, print it out, then what? Show it to everybody? I just don’t know lol
diamondcollector…you gotta sort from lowest to highest price…sometimes they give you the most expensive first. I keep finding 279 to 300 per person.

Yes. Package deals are wonderful things. However, there is a caveat with using 3rd party travel sites and packages. Changing flights or hotel can be difficult. Because you’re buying from Orbitz or whatever instead of from the hotel itself occasionally things get lost in the transfer. I’ve never had it happen to me, but I do know that it happens. The other thing is that the hotel can be a little remote from the center of the action. Not all the time, but sometimes, so definitely do a little homework on the hotel.

Other than that – it’s definitely not too good to be true. That’s why Expedia and Orbitz have stayed in business for so long!

Q&A: To Get To Iceland on a Smaller Budget?

Question by Nellie Mckay: To Get To Iceland on a Smaller Budget?
Hello!

I am an 18 year old girl. I live on the west coast of Canada (Vancouver).

I want to bring my grandparents to Iceland this year, and am willing to pay for everything. I looked up airflights, and for three people, the airfare alone comes up to almost ,000! I was amazed and really disappointed. I am paying for everything else during the stay, and calculating, it will come up to almost ,000 for the one week including airfare.

No way can I afford that, but I don’t want to disappoint my grandparents and I really wish to go.

So, does anyone know if there is a cheaper means to get to Iceland? By boat, or other? Cheap airflights, discounts? I just need some help. :(

Thank you to anyone who can help me out..

Best answer:

Answer by Sibbi S
Well I went online on dohop.com and found tickets for you for about 3200 can$, round trip for 3 people.
The stay will be cheap as the Icelandic krona is weak against the Canadian Dollar.
