First time backpacking overseas. Decided on India (sorry Thailand and Vietnam, next time). And I’m having a hard time finding comprehensive information on how to plan my trip. I’ve been advised against the Lonely Planet books, as they are apparently aimed toward your average “has more money than a college student” tourist. Trying to go for minimum spending. I’ve heard of street food and produce for a couple rupees (fractions of a cent). But I’ve found very little about hostels, besides the fact that there are a ton of them. Are there websites that will give me useful information on which hostels are cheaper or better than others? And on average, how much is the cost of staying a night at a hostel? My ballpark figure for the whole trip is 00, and I’m hoping to stay at least 8 weeks. Is it safe to assume that after airfare and visas and whatnot, – a day seems reasonable? Too high? Too low? I frankly have no clue what to expect.
My length of stay leads me to my second big question, about how long would it feasibly take me to cover the amount of ground I want to…. I want to see Delhi, Rajasthan, Mumbai, and Goa… Which is a straightforward enough route. But I also want to hit Kolkata and Darjeeling. Which would make the difference between a straight line, and a bigass circle. I don’t know if it’d be more realistic to save those two for a different trip.
I’d pretty much just like to get some input and advice from experienced folks who’ve gone through what I’m aspiring to.

Are you a tourist or a adventurous traveler?
Do not plan, just wander aimlessly like a stray dog. that will give you the best adventure.
forget the luxury of the hostels. what do you think park benches, and train Stations are for. or hang out at the Universities and meet, other students. crash at their place , they will be happy to share their food with you.
Suggest you first head down to Kerla,Trivandrum and zigzag your way north, travel by train and bus, foot, elephant.
it did it in 1975 including Sri Lanka and Bangledesh.
also best to travel alone.

Just search tours and travels and you can find a number of sites. But do not be too enthusiast as my experience says all offer same price though claim they are cheapest. You can get some discount if you get reserved more than one month earlier or if the flight is short of passengers and on last minute they are in search of them.
